"I know all about having to fight to exist." - Frey, Shatter City

Frey is the identical twin sister of Rafia, the third daughter of Shreve, and Rafia's bodyguard and body double. Frey is the main character and protagonist in Impostors. Frey also joined the Fortnite Organization Shreve in 2023

Appearance[]

Frey and Rafi are identical twin daughters of Father. Frey has more muscle than Rafi so she tones to match. When Rafi gains weight, Frey wears sculpted body armor. They wear similar clothes in public. As the daughter of a natural pretty, Frey is akin to a natural pretty herself, so much so that their father proclaims they will "never need a real operation." Additionally, Frey remarks that their face is a "mix of [their father's] glower and [their mother's] angelic face".

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Their mother was a natural pretty killed during the pretty era before they were born by rebel kidnappers when she resisted the kidnapping of their 7-year-old son, Seanan. Their father had her mother's eggs harvested immediately following her death so that he could have more children. Frey was born 26 minutes after Rafia, so she was designated Rafi's body double and protector.

Frey originally didn't have a name, and was called "Mirror", her security codename, like how Rafia's codename is "Gemstone". When Rafia was learning to write her own name, she tried to teach her sister, and it was misspelled and skewed so that it spelled "Frey".

Frey started combat training when she was 7 years old. Only a few trusted people knew of Frey's existence, and subsequently Frey was confined behind marked red lines in her father's tower, unable to venture past them, unless she was pretending to be Rafia. The combat training gave Frey extensive injuries over the years, the full scope of which was able to seen in x-rays years later.

Sensei Noriko[]

Sensei Noriko was Rafi's etiquette tutor when she was young. When Frey and Rafi were 9 years old, when Rafia was being shown how to curtsy by Sensei Noriko, Rafia became angry with Sensei Noriko and wanted to punish her. Rafia sent Frey to her next lesson, with the intention of getting Sensei Noriko punished, unbenknownst to Frey. [1] Sensei Noriko sensed that something was wrong, so to prevent her from telling the other tutors, Frey told Sensei that she was Rafi's twin. Sensei Noriko was never seen again. The girls use this incident as a reminder of the dangers of revealing their secret to outsiders.

Assassin Attack[]

When Frey and Rafi were 15 years old, Rafia made an appearance to give a speech. The speech was originally supposed to be given by their father, who pulled out at the last moment. The attack began after she ended her speech and was on her way to the viewing balcony. Frey was about to switch places with Rafi when the sniper opened fire. A bullet shattered some wood which led to splinters flying towards Rafi's face, resulting in a scar above her eyebrow.

Frey quickly jumped into action, crawling around overturned tables and chairs to get to the assassin. She used her pulse knife to cut through a table, causing an explosion of smoke and sawdust to disorient the assassin. The assassin coughed in the smoke, alerting Frey to his exact location. She killed him with her pulse knife. We later learn that the assassin was there to kill her father, going against Rebel orders. He was the lover of Boss X, as well as her older brother Seanan, which was unbeknownst to Frey. Their father undoubtedly found out it was Seanan immediately after the attack, and their father's hatred of Frey likely began here.

After the assassination attack, Rafia insisted on a keeping a scar as a reminder of the attack, and subsequently Frey needed one to match. Dr. Orteg had to ask their father for permission to give Rafia a scar, but no permission was needed to wound Frey.

Impostors[]

At the beginning of the events of Impostors, Frey is made to train with improvised weapons. Frey isn't made aware of why for a month, until she is made aware that she is being sent to Victoria in Rafia's place, as a hostage for their first family in a deal. The deal entails that their father will give Victoria's military support in driving rebels away from the ruins in exchange for metal in their nearby ruins. Taking Rafia hostage was to ensure that their father didn't take the metal and leave. However, their father had no intention of ever sending Rafia, or upholding his end of the bargain for long. For another month, Frey is taught what is normally taught to Rafia - etiquette, language, dance, history, etc - in preparation. Before Frey is set to leave, she and Rafia go hoverboarding one last time, where Rafia gives Frey a cyrano, one that is passive and doesn't transmit so that she can get French translations in real time to help with Frey's deception.

Frey is escorted to Victoria via a fleet of hovercars by Victorian forces. En route to Victoria, Frey's cyrano informs her that she is running late, and she is informed that the hovercar envoy is taking a detour over the ruins, where they are attacked by rebels. They are forced to jump out of the hovercar, where she and the surviving crew of the hovercar take cover in a fallen building. Accompanying her, Sergeant Tani Slidell tries to get Frey to take cover, as Shreve is an hour away. Frey is adamant that she'll be okay as she believes her father would never let her be in danger for that long. As Slidell tries to make Frey go to a rendezvous point and goes to grab her arm, Frey downs Slidell and insists that they stay there. Immediately after that, Shreve counterattacks the rebels with suborbital insertion drones, and Frey soon arrives to Victoria without further incident.

The next day, Frey then meets the Palafoxes at breakfast, followed by Frey receiving a tour of the house by Col Palafox. He seems wary of her initially, and slowly warms up to her. Col is warmest when Frey isn't explicitly giving an impression of Rafia. When she does, Col tends to give her strange looks. Col surprises Frey by telling her that his mother, Aribella Palafox, aims for them to get together for a blood alliance. At this, Col and Frey proclaim an alliance between themselves, to not be pawns for their families.

Frey and Col grow closer.

When Frey fails their father's test and let him know that she has feelings for Col, he launches an attack on Victoria, only allowing a 2 minute warning for Frey, and throws her away for his own gain. Frey escapes with Col to the neighboring wild, where she eventually tells him that she is not Rafia, and that she is actually her twin sister and her body double and protector. Col doesn't believe her at first, as his family determined previously based on feeds of Rafia over her whole life, that Rafia had developed a split in her personality around the age of 7, and never considered that there could be two different people. Col only believes Frey is not Rafia when Rafia appears on the feeds following the attack.

Frey and Col eventually regroup with the remains of Victoria's military, and plan a coup against Shreve to dispose her father of power and place Rafia as the leader of Shreve. During the attack, Rafia and Frey give a speech together, revealing Frey's existence to the world and how she was disposed of by their father, and called on the people to aid them in defying their father's rule. After the speech, Col is apprehended by Shreve forces, and Frey decides to stay in Shreve, to pose as Rafia again to protect Col from their father.

At the end of the events in the book, Frey proclaims that she will kill their father when she escapes Shreve.

Shatter City[]

Frey is trapped in Shreve with Col, staying here to protect him from her father, the threat of his death looming in her mind. Everyone believes her to be the dearly beloved heiress, Rafia, the role she has played so many times she has trouble differentiating between her sister and herself. The only one who knows her true identity is Col, her betrothed.
