The Rusty Ruins are the remains of an old city that was inhabited by Rusties. It is now abandoned and most people do not venture out there because it is beyond city limits. It is filled with empty, decaying steel buildings and abandoned cars on the road. It also has railroad tracks and an amusement park.
The ruins were used as a rendezvous point for runaways heading to the Smoke. Tally Youngblood was first brought to the ruins on a school field trip, and later taken there by Shay.

When runaways traveling to the Smoke arrived at the Rusty Ruins, they signaled the person waiting for them, David. David used safety sparklers, but after the smoke was destroyed by Special Circumstances near the end of Uglies, this practice stopped.
